Uncovering our history with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

We support the arts in all forms as part of our commitment to connecting cultures and helping communities thrive. Our partnership with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is built upon a shared vision to understand the past and expand this nation’s sense of itself while exploring the connections that bind us and our shared histories.

GOSPEL, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., explores the triumphant story of Black gospel music. “Gospel is more than the soundtrack of the African American experience, it's the beating heart and soul…From the blues to hip-hop, African Americans have driven sonic innovation for more than a century. While styles have changed, there’s one sound that’s remained a constant source of strength and courage. Comfort and wisdom. Gospel.” Watch as Gates tells “the story of how a people learned to sing the Lord’s song in a strange land.” That is, the powerful story of GOSPEL.

GOSPEL was proudly made with support from Bank of America and this 2-part, 4 hour docuseries can be viewed on PBS Passport.
