Building strong communities through nonprofit support

Apr 16, 2018

Access to quality education is a challenge for many children in Asia Pacific. In China, we are supporting the education of children of migrant workers. Hundreds of children and their families have accessed programs in early childhood development and after-school tutoring in Beijing through our partner Vibrant Communities. In Hong Kong, we reach out to 5,000 individuals and 4,000 families through Bring Me A Book’s programs supporting low-income areas. We funded six libraries in the city as well as family reading clubs in five communities in 2016.

We’re also encouraging interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In 2016, our employee affinity group Women in Technology & Operations hosted Tech4Girls sessions for 67 female secondary school students in Mumbai, Bangalore, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney. The goal of the program is to share our capabilities in banking and technology and inspire participants to consider a career in our industry.

Empowering women to join the workforce is crucial to the success of their own families. In partnership with YWCA Kuala Lumpur’s Vocational Training Opportunity Center, we provided 100 women with vocational training. In Bangkok, we supported Friends International’s employment center, connecting caregivers and youth living in slums and on the street with stable employment. In the center’s first year of operation, nearly 1,000 individuals took part in training, job searches, and micro enterprise development workshops.
