Bringing some color to Hennepin Avenue

A beautiful glass mosaic sprung up overnight on Hennepin Avenue with the help of Bank of America.

A 25-foot vertical mosaic garden has been installed on the street-facing side of the former Solera building located at 900 Hennepin Ave., next to the historic Orpheum Theatre. Three rows of programmable LED lighting frame a living garden above a community-made mosaic mural.

Bank of America, a long time environmental steward, is also committed to efforts around community revitalization and sought the opportunity to further showcase the arts and cultural initiatives taking place in the Twin Cities by collaborating with Hennepin Theatre Trust.

“We support Hennepin Theatre Trust in their efforts to transform how people experience public spaces on Hennepin Avenue,” said Katie Simpson, Bank of America Minneapolis/St. Paul market president. “The vertical mosaic garden is a beautiful example of public art adding value to a neighborhood and a community—Bank of America is proud to be part of such an impactful project.”

Mark Nerenhausen, president and CEO of Hennepin Theatre Trust, said that collaborations between businesses and nonprofits make a big difference in bringing innovative and creative projects to life in an urban center such as WeDo™ — the West Downtown MPLS Cultural District. “Bank of America’s meaningful support for arts and cultural initiatives like the vertical garden wall brings beauty and vitality to downtown Minneapolis. Our collaboration has enabled us to transform an ordinary brick wall into a beautiful art installation that enhances the urban experience for millions of people each year.”

Hennepin Theatre Trust and the bank hosted a community participation event where volunteers worked together to create the large-scale mosaic mural.

Bank of America is a longtime partner of Hennepin Theatre Trust, supporting their programs as well as partnering with the arts group to revitalize and bring culture to downtown Minneapolis. In addition to the vertical garden, the bank also recently sponsored the creation of five “pop-up” parks, referred to as Parklots, in parking areas across downtown. Bank of America has been the exclusive title sponsor of the Bank of America Broadway on Hennepin series for multiple seasons.
