Ending the cycle of poverty

Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) has been tirelessly working to end the multigenerational poverty cycle in Minnesota, and now with support from Bank of America, the nonprofit will make even more of a positive impact on local families.

NAZ works side by side with low-income families as they put their children on a path to college. Working with their 40-plus organizations and schools, NAZ brings a collaborative approach and an effective use of public and private resources. Bank of America joined the mission by naming NAZ a 2017 Neighborhood Builder, a designation that comes with $200,000 in flexible funding and leadership training.

“Northside Achievement Zone is making a huge difference by creating an environment where the entire family is supported,” said Katie Simpson, Bank of America’s Minneapolis-St. Paul Market president. “We are really pleased to be able to support their work with this grant.”

The Neighborhood Builders grant will allow NAZ to improve support for its clients through programs customized to each child and family. The funding will also help the organization foster leadership, build capacity and ensure sustainability to maintain momentum toward building a stronger, more vibrant North Minneapolis community.

“At NAZ, we believe a culture of achievement can only be built from within the community—one family at a time,” said NAZ President and CEO Sondra Samuels. “This shift in culture not only benefits families and transforms the community, but just as importantly, helps every child believe he or she can succeed. We are honored to receive the 2017 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders grant, and we plan to leverage this opportunity to advance our mission, support our families, and ensure that our children will graduate from high school prepared for college.”

In addition to the Bank of America Neighborhood Builder recognition, NAZ also recently received the Minnesota Business Partnership’s Minnesota’s Future award and the 2015 Best Nonprofit Award by the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce.
