Founded in 1887, the United Way operates through almost 1,200 local offices nationwide with a coalition of nonprofit partners in those communities to pool efforts in fundraising and support, identify and resolve pressing issues and make measurable changes to critical needs. United Way does this through partnerships with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood associations, the faith community, and others. It focuses on education, income and health — the building blocks for a good quality of life and strong community.
Enabling upward mobility
Committed to addressing the issues of economic mobility, David believes the United Way’s community impact strategy and mobilizing model play a pivotal role in enabling upward mobility for at-risk and economically disadvantaged people and communities.
“The United Way of Central Carolinas’ work is especially important as we grapple with these issues across the Charlotte region,” noted David.
One example is the recent effort driven by the United Way and its agency partners to help 300 families forced out of their homes due to unsafe living conditions in the Lake Arbor apartment complex. Within days of a special appeal by the United Way of Central Carolinas, 170 donors came together to raise more than $270,000 to support those families who are vacating their homes in crisis.
And the impact doesn’t stop there. Bank of America employees are doing their part too.
In 2018 alone, Bank of America employees donated close to $3 million and volunteered nearly 15,000 hours of their time to the United Way worldwide to help make a difference in the lives of more than 61 million people in nearly 1,800 communities across the globe. Beginning in 2019, the United Way became eligible for matching gifts through Bank of America’s updated, more flexible employee giving program.
“It is a great boost to have contributions from community partners such as Bank of America, which not only doubles the impact of employee contributions through matching gifts, but also has a robust cadre of volunteers who regularly provide on-the-ground support,” said Laura Clark, president and CEO of United Way Central Carolinas.
When contributing to the United Way of Central Carolinas, David appreciates the bank’s dollar-for-dollar match and takes advantage of it. “Free money for the charity of my choice?” cited David. “Absolutely! It’s a no-brainer.”
