TITLE CARD: Bank of America Presents: Love & Careers
SUPER: Gabriel Tyree, US Navy Veteran
[Gabriel Tyree]
My full name is Gabriel Lee Tyree.
SUPER: Gabriel Tyree, US Navy Veteran
[Gabriel Tyree]
The branch that I served in was the United States Navy.
I was in Jacksonville, Florida, and we were getting ready to deploy, and I stopped by a Bank of America Branch and I was going to make a withdrawal so I could have some money for the trip.
And that's where I met Erica.
[Erica Tyree]
I was an Assistant Banking Center Manager at the time.
SUPER: Erica Tyree, Bank of America, Co-Chair, Military Support & Assistance Group
[Erica Tyree]
So as he walked in he had his motorcycle helmet and I just said "Oh it's a great day to ride!"
[Gabriel Tyree]
It was perfect timing when I met Erica. She assisted me and the rest is history.
I think the next day I was leaving.
[Erica Tyree]
He did go on a deployment, I would send him care packages once a week.
[Gabriel Tyree]
I'd always heard that if you could stick with somebody throughout a deployment, or if somebody can stick with you, you and that other person have a very good chance of making it.
[Erica Tyree]
We started in Jacksonville, Florida.
[Gabriel Tyree]
And then we went to Great Lakes.
[Erica Tyree]
After two years went to Detroit, Michigan for twelve months.
[Gabriel Tyree]
And then we went out west to San Diego.
[Erica Tyree]
And then back to Chicago for three years.
[Gabriel Tyree]
And then now we are here, in Dallas, Texas.
(light switch turns on)
[Erica Tyree]
Good morning, Cobi!
When we decided to get married, we both understood we both had a career.
(another light switch turns on)
[Erica Tyree]
My career was with Bank of America and his career was with the United States Navy.
I never really understood what it meant to be married to somebody in the service.
You know there's a move ahead of you.
And so, do you really invest time in friendships when you know you or them are going to be gone?
It's hard.
When you know, at the end of the day, you probably can't stay where you are, why would you really try to settle in?
So Bank of America has a program called MSAG, which is Military Support and Assistance Group.
Through MSAG, Bank of America is making a commitment to help military spouses ease that transition when it's time for that move.
(music picks up)
[Julian Parra]
Erica is a natural leader.
SUPER: Julian Parra, Bank of America, Business Banking Executive
[Julian Parra]
She is eager to learn.
She's goal oriented.
She's competitive.
And so, to me, those are the things I look for when I hire people.
SUPER: Kieth Cockrell, Bank of America, Life Services Executive
[Kieth Cockrell]
Erica demonstrated that she wasn't just a hard worker, she was committed to really developing.
To continue to excel in her job as her husband was deployed to different areas was most impressive!
[Gabriel Tyree]
And it's kind of like she would get new orders and I would get new orders and we both transferred together with our new duty stations.
[Erica Tyree]
He had to leave on his deployment, and that experience is…
(Erica begins to tear up)
[Gabriel Tyree]
Being deployed while I had a kid back home, that was one of the toughest things I'd ever had to do. You leave one day, you don't know when you're coming back.
(music picks up)
[Erica Tyree]
When it came time for him to think about retiring, he sacrificed for our family and for me.
By saying, "You know what? I'm going to go ahead and retire so that you can really continue to grow your career."
Twenty years ago I started as a part time teller and now I'm Senior Vice President, Client Management Executive.
If it wasn't for Bank of America, I don't know where I would be today.
[Gabriel Tyree]
The Bank has given us some amazing opportunities, and just like the military, they take care of their people.
