Taking action and giving back to protect our waterways with Beach Sweeps

Bank of America employee Valarie Embrey uses our employee giving program to contribute to the cause she cares about most, our water resources.

Everyone, everywhere has the opportunity to give – of their talent, time or resources. There are many opportunities for people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter the most to them, which is why Bank of America employee Valarie Embrey has chosen to generously give back and take action to ensure the waterways in New Jersey remain clean and free of debris by supporting Clean Ocean Action (COA).

Through Bank of America’s employee giving and volunteering programs, Valarie is able to help make a difference in her community. The programs offer her the flexibility and convenience to support COA by donating however and whenever works best for her, including doubling her impact through our matching gifts program.

“We all have something to give and the ability to act generously,” says Valarie. “The environment is our only home and I feel it’s my responsibility to take immediate action and give back.”

In 2018, Bank of America employees contributed more than $575,000 to environmental causes such as COA and their donations were doubled through the bank’s matching gifts program.  Additionally, employees volunteered for approximately 49,000 hours to strengthen communities with environmental efforts.

As the co-chair of the New Jersey My Environment chapter – part of a global network of employees who drive positive change as environmental stewards at work, at home and in their communities – Valarie leads our volunteer coastal cleanup efforts to help make the New Jersey waterways healthier. Valarie and her teammates are committed to preserving the environment for future generations, participating in Beach Sweeps in over 70 locations along New Jersey's coastline.

Through giving and volunteering, Valarie builds her leadership skills and benefits from team building, networking, and the morale-boosting perk of knowing that her contributions make a difference.

Each year employees provide generous financial donations to more than 25,000 nonprofits around the world, directing more than $74 million last year in total to communities via individual giving and the bank’s matching gifts program.
