Hard at Work in Arkansas
Bank of America began serving Arkansas more than 130 years ago. In 1877, local merchant W.B. Worthen opened Worthen Bank and Trust Company before eventually receiving a state charter in 1902. After Worthen’s death, his wife Mollie took a leadership role in the bank and used the family’s money to protect customers’ deposits during the Depression. Worthen became part of the Bank of America family in 1997 when Boatmen’s Bank of St. Louis was acquired by NationsBank. Today, Bank of America is one of the nation’s largest financial institutions and provides services to half of all American households.
