Recycle and Reuse – shoes with a purpose

Last year our My Environment® employee program partnered with Soles4Souls, a non-profit that collects gently used shoes for those in need to help end the cycle of poverty. The organization also received a $13,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.

Our employees collected an estimated 25,000 pairs of shoes at 352 collection locations across four countries. Soles4Souls is donating these shoes to people in developing countries and providing business opportunities that provide financial stability.

“Every shoe donated through our partnership with Bank of America helps move towards creating more sustainable jobs and critical relief for those in need in developing countries,” said Brian Granfors, Creative and Communications Director, Soles4Souls. “It's partnerships like this that will allow us to grow our impact."

Soles4Souls also provides new shoes to those in need. In some developing countries, walking is the primary mode of transportation. Having access to shoes is critical to everyday living including attending school, going to work as well as protecting their feet against infection and diseases. Also, donating and redistributing gently worn shoes can help prevent unnecessary waste by providing another viable opportunity for these items to be worn and enjoyed.

Soles4Souls opened its doors in 2006 and has provided more than 30 million pairs of shoes to 127 countries. This nonprofit provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world.
