Running in red for Misericordia

Misericordia has been supporting those in need since 1921, and today, is home to more than 600 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Misericordia has grown substantially during the past eight decades and serves the greater Chicago community, including people from diverse racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, in three prominent ways: exceptional programs for its residents, peace of mind for residents’ families, and sharing its mission with thousands of volunteers and supporters.

It is those volunteers and supporters that help keep Misericordia’s 31-acre Chicago campus and programs up and running. Like many nonprofit organizations, Misericordia must raise funds annually to cover operating costs not paid for by the government. This year, the organization’s efforts will focus on closing it’s nearly $20 million shortfall, which is why Misericordia’s participation in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is more important than ever.

“With such a large population, combined with our annual shortfall this year and the fact that 20 percent of our residents come from poverty-stricken families, fundraising events, such as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, are extremely important and instrumental in helping us cover some of those costs,” said Therese Loftus, development officer at Misericordia. “Not only does the marathon act as a great fundraising driver and help us spread our message, it is also a really wonderful experience for our runners, residents, their families and our staff. It’s truly a win-win situation.”

For the sixth year in a row, Misericordia is one of the official Bank of America Chicago Marathon charity partners. Stationed in the heart of the action on Michigan Avenue, residents, family members, staff and volunteers will gather on Oct. 9 in their Misericordia red to cheer on the 2016 “Heartracers” team. The team consists of 50 runners, many of whom have a deep personal connection to a resident at Misericordia, whether it is a sibling, parent, or extended family member. Over the past six years, Misericordia has raised more than $500,000 through the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, with the amount progressively increasing each year.

Looking ahead beyond October, Misericordia is excited to continue to drive awareness around its mission and inspire new runners to join the “Heartracers” team through its partnership with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the bank as a whole.

The Bank of America and Misericordia partnership runs much deeper than the Chicago Marathon. Since 2003, Bank of America has supported the organization through the Matching Gifts program and has provided operating grant support since 2008 to help further their mission to provide high-quality residential, training and employment services to their residents.
