At Bank of America, our heritage is in our name. When our earliest predecessor, the Massachusetts Bank, opened for business on July 5, 1784, the Constitution had yet to be adopted. John Hancock signed the bank’s charter in his role of governor, making it only the second bank to receive a state charter. In the late 20th century, North Carolina National Bank began a series of acquisitions that eventually consolidated several thousand banks, forming today’s Bank of America. Generation after generation, the financial institutions that are part of us have played a role in the development of our nation’s communities and the growth of our economy.
