Located in the heart of Streeterville, with easy access to many hotels, restaurants, businesses and residences, City Scents Floral & Home keeps busy throughout the year. Yet, 12 years ago, when approached by the Bank of America Chicago Marathon to become the official florists of the race, Theresa and Pasquale Montana, the owners of the shop, took on the challenge. Now each October, they see a 25 percent increase in sales during race weekend.
Team work is key
Responsible for 300 floral arrangements for four tents as well as 500 congratulatory runner bouquets, City Scents welcomes all the help they can get race weekend. Typically a 12-person shop, City Scents relies on 25 volunteers, as well as their Bank of America Chicago Marathon partners, to ensure they are prepared come race day – with planning beginning as early as January.
“We really enjoy the relationship we have developed with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon staff and our volunteers over the past 12 years,” said Theresa Montana. “Everyone is so nice to work with. It’s truly a team effort. If we have any issues at all, the Marathon team is there assisting us almost instantly. Our volunteers have been with us for years and years as well. They love the Marathon and the excitement that comes with it on race day. It’s infectious.”
Last, but not least
Runners themselves, the Montanas say their favorite part of their job on race day is waiting for the very last person to cross the finish line and greeting them with one of City Scent’s signature Bank of America Chicago Marathon bouquets.
“We were leaving one year, and everybody had left and the race closed, but there were two runners who were still making their way to the finish line,” she said. “We were there to give them flowers and it warmed our hearts. As everyone else had already left, they were so grateful we were there to congratulate them crossing the finish line, they started to cry. We were humbled by that.”
A passionate partnership
The Montanas hope to continue to be a part of the exiting and infectious environment surrounding race weekend for many years to come. By working on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, City Scents says their partnership with Bank of America has grown and truly enhanced their business.
